Is there a hands-on practical exam in Florida?

No. Florida licenses cosmetologists on two written, computer-based examinations — a theory exam and a clinical exam — and neither one asks you to perform a service on a mannequin or a live model. Several states do require a practical; Florida does not. That is why a scored question bank is the whole preparation here rather than half of it.

Can I take the exam in Spanish?

Yes. The DBPR publishes its candidate information bulletin for this exam in Spanish as well as English, and the examination is offered in Spanish. Confirm the language option when you schedule, because it is selected at registration and not at the test center. Everything on this site — questions, answer choices and explanations — is written in both languages, so you can study in the language you will test in.

What score do I need?

75% on each exam, scored separately. The theory exam and the clinical exam each contain 65 scored questions in 90 minutes, so 75% is roughly 49 of 65 on each. Passing one does not carry over to the other — they are two independent results.

What is actually on each exam?

The theory exam is weighted toward safety and sanitation (34%) and client services (24%); those two are more than half of it before you reach facials, nails or the law. The clinical exam is dominated by chemistry: hair coloring and lightening (39%) plus permanent waving and chemical relaxing (34%) are 73% of it. Haircutting is 10% and scalp care 5%. Study time that mirrors those weights is the single highest-return decision you make.

Do I need an account?

Who writes these questions?

They are written against the domain outline the DBPR publishes in its candidate information bulletin, and against Chapter 477 of the Florida Statutes and Chapter 61G5 of the Florida Administrative Code for anything legal. They are not copies of real exam items — nobody outside the testing contractor has those, and any site claiming otherwise is telling you something that should worry you. Every answer cites what it rests on so you can check it.

How many hours of school does Florida require?

1,200 hours at a licensed cosmetology school, or an equivalent apprenticeship, before you may sit for the exam. You must also be at least 16 and have completed the tenth grade or its equivalent. This site is practice for the examination — it is not a training program and does not award hours.

What does the exam cost?

Check the current fee in the DBPR candidate information bulletin before you register, and treat any figure you read elsewhere — including on a prep site — as out of date. Examination and application fees are set by rule and change; we would rather send you to the source than quote you a number you might budget around.
