Everything here comes from Chapter 477 of the Florida Statutes and Chapter 61G5 of the Florida Administrative Code: license requirements, display, renewal, salon licensing, scope of practice and the Board's authority. Short domain, entirely memorisable, and free points if you read Florida's own rules once.
Where people lose points
- Florida requires 1,200 hours of training at a licensed school or an equivalent apprenticeship, plus a minimum age of 16 and a completed tenth grade or its equivalent. Hour requirements differ by state and a national study guide will quote a different number.
- The salon holds its own license, separate from yours. Working in an unlicensed salon is a violation by the licensee too, not only by the owner — holding a valid personal license is not a defense.
- Your license is displayed conspicuously at your work station. "Available on request" and "kept in the office file" are the distractors, and both are wrong.
- Cosmetology is not the practice of medicine. Diagnosing a condition, treating a disease, or removing a growth is outside the license no matter how routine it looks in the chair — you refer to a physician.
- Specialty registrations — facials, nails, full specialist — are separate credentials with their own hour requirements, and holding one does not authorize the full scope of a cosmetology license. The exam tests the boundary in both directions.
