The recurring exam scenario is a client who wants something her hair cannot safely take, and the correct answer is nearly always the one that slows the service down.
Where people lose points
- Texture and density are different measurements. Texture is the diameter of one strand — fine, medium, coarse. Density is how many strands occupy a square inch. Fine hair can be dense and coarse hair can be sparse, and the exam swaps the terms deliberately.
- Elasticity is tested wet, and it is what tells you whether the hair will survive a chemical service. Hair with poor elasticity that will not return after stretching is a reason to postpone, not a reason to use a gentler formula.
- A predisposition or patch test goes behind the ear or in the inner elbow 24 to 48 hours before any aniline derivative tint, every single time — not once when the client first came in.
- A signed release form does not transfer liability for negligence. It documents that the client was informed. If a service should not be performed, a signature does not make it performable, and the exam rewards refusal over paperwork.
- Draping changes with the service. A dry drape for cutting, a shampoo drape with a towel under the cape for wet work, and a chemical drape that keeps product off skin and clothing. Reaching for the same cape for everything is a marked-wrong answer.
