Gray coverage and resistant hair

Gray coverage fails for a reason that is easy to state and easy to forget under pressure: there is nothing underneath to build on. Every technique on this page exists to compensate for that one absence.

Why gray resistsIt has no melanin and therefore no underlying pigment
What "resistant" meansA tightly compacted cuticle and low porosity
A hairline that keeps failingPre-soften the resistant area first
Blending a little gray with no liftDemi-permanent color
Standard developer for gray coverage20 volume
About 70% gray, full coverage at level 6Add a natural or neutral base to the formula
Coarse resistant hair in a texture serviceA stronger solution and a longer processing time

Where the point is lost: Resistance is a porosity finding, not a color problem, which is why it shows up in the texture domain too. The same tightly packed cuticle that refuses tint also refuses waving lotion and relaxer, and in every case the answer is to change the product and the timing together — not to leave a normal formula on longer and hope.
