Permanent Waving and Chemical Relaxing

Chemical texture is 34% of the Florida clinical examination and 17% of the combined 130 scored questions — tied with sanitation as the second-heaviest domain overall. Seven cycles cover the side bonds and what breaks them, perm chemistry and wave types, rods, wrapping and processing, the two incompatible relaxer chemistries, relaxer application and timing, and the analysis findings that end a service before it starts.
Side bonds: what is temporary and what is not
Everything in this domain rests on which bond a service touches.
HYDROGEN BONDS are responsible for the TEMPORARY shape of a wet set. They are broken by water and re-form as the hair dries, which is exactly why a wet set is temporary and why humidity collapses it.
DISULFIDE BONDS are the strong, permanent bonds, and they are the ones a permanent wave breaks. Only a chemical service reaches them.
A PERMANENT WAVE works in two chemical steps:
1. REDUCTION. The waving solution performs reduction, breaking disulfide bonds so the hair can take the shape of the rod.
2. OXIDATION. The NEUTRALIZER rebuilds those disulfide bonds IN THE NEW SHAPE. That is the whole point of the neutralizer, and it is not the same as "stopping" the process.
A HYDROXIDE RELAXER does something categorically different. It removes a sulfur atom from a disulfide bond and converts it into a single LANTHIONINE bond — a process called LANTHIONIZATION. Lanthionine bonds are PERMANENT AND CANNOT BE CONVERTED BACK.
That one fact generates more exam items than anything else in the domain, because it means hydroxide-relaxed hair can never take a thio wave. Time does not reverse it. A gentler acid wave relies on the same chemistry and does not help. No filler restores the missing bonds. Only NEW GROWTH could ever be permed.
A THIO RELAXER, by contrast, works by the SAME reduction chemistry as a permanent wave: it breaks disulfide bonds, the hair is smoothed straight rather than wound on a rod, and an OXIDIZING neutralizer rebuilds the bonds in the new shape.
So there are two straightening systems with two different mechanisms, and the practical consequence is in the next-but-one cycle: they must never be layered over one another, in either direction.
Wave types, and where the processing happens
ALKALINE (COLD) WAVES use AMMONIUM THIOGLYCOLATE as the active ingredient. They process at room temperature, without added heat, and they are the stronger system.
ACID-BALANCED WAVES process at a LOWER pH and generally need ADDED HEAT. They are gentler, which is what makes them the choice for hair that will not tolerate an alkaline wave.
EXOTHERMIC WAVES create their OWN HEAT through a chemical reaction when the components are mixed. The name is the definition: exo, out; thermic, heat.
A SOFT CURL PERMANENT loosens an EXISTING curl pattern into a larger one — it does not straighten and it does not add curl to straight hair.
TIMING is where candidates lose points. Most of the processing in an ALKALINE permanent wave occurs during the FIRST FIVE TO TEN MINUTES. That is why leaving a perm on longer does not produce a better curl, and why over-processing sneaks up: by the time you look, the damage was done in the first stretch.
A TEST CURL during processing tells you whether the wave has processed ENOUGH — nothing else. Unwind a rod partway and look at the shape of the S.
The two failure modes look nothing alike.
UNDER-PROCESSED: a weak, limp curl that RELAXES WITHIN A FEW DAYS. Too few bonds were broken.
OVER-PROCESSED: the correct response is to recommend CONDITIONING TREATMENTS and POSTPONE chemical services. There is no re-perming an over-processed head, and nothing on the shelf restores it.
POROSITY and TEXTURE drive product choice in both directions. Porous hair needs a MILDER solution and a SHORTER time. Very fine hair processes MORE QUICKLY and over-processes easily. Coarse, resistant hair with a tightly packed cuticle needs a STRONGER solution and a LONGER processing time.
And one sequencing rule: when a client wants both a permanent wave and color, the order is PERM FIRST, THEN COLOR after the recommended interval.
Rods, wrapping and base placement
One variable controls curl size and it is not the solution: the DIAMETER OF THE ROD. A client who wants a soft, loose wave rather than tight curls gets LARGE-DIAMETER RODS — not a shorter processing time and not a milder solution, both of which change how completely the wave forms rather than how big the curl is.
A CONCAVE ROD is narrower in the middle, so it produces a TIGHTER CURL AT THE CENTER of the rod than at its ends. A straight rod gives a uniform curl along its length.
WRAPPING patterns:
CROQUIGNOLE winds FROM THE ENDS TOWARD THE SCALP. It is the standard wrap, and it gives a tighter curl at the ends than at the base.
SPIRAL wrapping gives a curl of UNIFORM SIZE FROM SCALP TO ENDS, which is why it is the answer for long hair.
END PAPERS control the ends and keep them smooth. If a finished perm shows SHARP BENT ENDS — fishhooks — on many strands, the ends were NOT SMOOTHLY ENCLOSED in the papers.
SECTIONING: the width of each PANEL is governed by the LENGTH OF THE ROD being used. A BASE SECTION is the portion of the panel measured out for ONE rod.
BASE PLACEMENT decides volume at the scalp. ON BASE — the rod sitting within its own base section, wound so it rests on it — produces the GREATEST VOLUME at the scalp. Half-off-base and off-base progressively reduce it.
TENSION when winding: enough to keep the strand SMOOTH, WITHOUT STRETCHING it. Stretched hair springs back after the service and the curl pattern goes with it.
And rods, like every other implement, are CLEANED and then IMMERSED IN DISINFECTANT between clients.
The perm service, start to finish
BEFORE. Shampoo with a GENTLE shampoo and NO VIGOROUS SCALP MANIPULATION — the point is to avoid creating abrasions that a chemical can enter. Test ELASTICITY to confirm the hair can withstand the process. Drape with a towel under a waterproof cape.
CLIENT PROTECTION. A COTTON COIL goes around the hairline before waving lotion is applied, and it is REPLACED WHEN IT BECOMES SATURATED. A saturated coil stops absorbing and starts holding solution against the skin, which is the opposite of its purpose.
If waving lotion runs onto the neck and the client reports STINGING: rinse the skin AT ONCE and replace the saturated cotton. Not at the end of the timer.
DURING. Wind with even tension, take test curls to judge processing, and remember that most of the action in an alkaline wave happened in the first five to ten minutes.
NEUTRALIZING is a sequence, and the first step is the one people skip. The hair must be RINSED THOROUGHLY AND BLOTTED before the neutralizer is applied — leftover waving solution dilutes the neutralizer and keeps reducing bonds you are trying to rebuild. Then the neutralizer goes on, and the RODS ARE REMOVED AFTER THE NEUTRALIZER HAS BEEN ON FOR THE SPECIFIED TIME. Removing them early undoes the shape you just fixed.
AFTER. Tell the client to WAIT THE PERIOD THE MANUFACTURER SPECIFIES before washing, COMMONLY 24 TO 48 HOURS.
RECORD the SOLUTION, ROD SIZES, TIMING and RESULT on her card. This is not administrative tidiness — the next service depends on knowing how this hair behaved, and in this domain a missing record can mean applying an incompatible chemistry.
Relaxers: two chemistries that must never meet
HYDROXIDE relaxers cause LANTHIONIZATION — permanent, irreversible. THIO relaxers break disulfide bonds and use an OXIDIZING neutralizer to rebuild them.
The products:
• SODIUM HYDROXIDE is the LYE relaxer.
• POTASSIUM, LITHIUM and GUANIDINE hydroxide are the NO-LYE alternatives — still hydroxide, still lanthionization, marketed as gentler on the scalp.
• A GUANIDINE relaxer is mixed on site from a CALCIUM HYDROXIDE CREAM and a GUANIDINE CARBONATE ACTIVATOR.
• AMMONIUM THIOGLYCOLATE and GLYCERYL MONOTHIOGLYCOLATE are the thio compounds — used in permanent waving and in thio relaxers.
Hydroxide relaxers sit STRONGLY ALKALINE, ABOVE pH 11, reaching as high as 13 or 14. That is why the scalp must be protected and why the service is unforgiving of broken skin. The milder alkaline range near 9 belongs to waving lotions and color, and nothing that straightens hair is acidic or neutral.
AFTER a hydroxide relaxer, the NEUTRALIZING SHAMPOO is acid-balanced and its only job is to STOP the action and RESTORE THE NORMAL ACIDIC pH. It rebuilds NOTHING — lanthionization is irreversible, so there is no bond to restore and none that could revert. It also cannot restore curl that has been chemically removed. Then a MOISTURIZING or PROTEIN CONDITIONER is applied.
BASE CREAMS. A protective base cream is an OIL-BASED BARRIER on the SCALP, HAIRLINE AND EARS so a strongly alkaline product cannot reach skin. It is NOT meant to touch the hair, so it neither moisturizes nor helps the product adhere, and it does not alter the speed of the reaction on the strand. A NO-BASE relaxer has the protective agent BUILT INTO THE FORMULA, so a separate base cream is not applied over the whole scalp — though the hairline and ears are usually still protected. It is still caustic, still requires neutralizing, and nothing makes any relaxer safe on broken skin.
STRENGTH — mild, regular, super — is matched to the HAIR: coarse resistant hair takes super, medium hair regular, fine, porous or previously damaged hair mild. Choosing a stronger product because the client wants a straighter result is how hair is destroyed. Degree of straightening is controlled by PROCESSING and SMOOTHING, not by escalating strength — which is also the answer when a client asks to be left with some wave rather than completely straight: yes, by STOPPING THE PROCESS BEFORE THE CURL IS FULLY REMOVED.
A TEXTURIZER is the same idea formalized: it processes for LESS TIME to LOOSEN rather than straighten.
Relaxer application, timing and what goes wrong
BEFORE. The client should AVOID SCRATCHING OR VIGOROUSLY BRUSHING the scalp before a relaxer, because it creates abrasions that a caustic chemical can enter. Examine the SCALP CONDITION and the HAIR'S STRENGTH before every relaxer service. Drape with a towel under a waterproof cape. GLOVES stay on throughout, because hydroxide is caustic and burns skin on contact.
PRODUCT HANDLING. Remove relaxer from its container with a CLEAN SPATULA into a SEPARATE BOWL — never dip back in. Apply with a NON-METALLIC applicator brush or the BACK OF A COMB, kept away from the scalp; metal is avoided because it can react with the chemical.
VIRGIN APPLICATION. Begin A SHORT DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SCALP — roughly a quarter to half an inch — and do the scalp area LAST, because body heat makes that zone process fastest. Starting at the scalp over-processes the new growth and risks a chemical burn. Beginning at the ends leaves the mid-shaft untreated; applying everywhere at once removes all control over timing.
ORDER OF SECTIONS: begin with the MOST RESISTANT AREA, so it gets the longest exposure while the fastest-processing zones get the least.
PARTINGS are THIN AND EVEN, commonly around a QUARTER INCH.
RETOUCH. NEW GROWTH ONLY. And the scalp area of a retouch is processed for the SHORTEST time, again because body heat accelerates the reaction there.
SMOOTHING is working the product through with GENTLE PRESSURE to straighten the strand — it is a step, not an afterthought, and it is where the degree of straightening is actually controlled.
CHECKING PROGRESS: periodic STRAND TESTS, pressing the hair smooth and releasing it.
RINSING: WARM water, thoroughly, for the FULL TIME SPECIFIED. Then neutralizing shampoo, then conditioner.
WHAT GOES WRONG. OVERLAPPING relaxer onto previously relaxed hair causes SEVERE BREAKAGE at the overlapped point. When a client's relaxed hair breaks about an inch from the scalp on several sections, overlapping is the most likely cause — the location is the clue.
BURNING during application: RINSE THE RELAXER OUT IMMEDIATELY. Not "finish the section."
RETOUCH FREQUENCY: only when there is ENOUGH NEW GROWTH to treat safely. Between appointments, the client is told that REGULAR CONDITIONING and GENTLE HANDLING protect the hair.
And afterwards the bowl and applicator brush are CLEANED and then DISINFECTED, like any other implement.
The analysis findings that end a service
Chemical texture is the domain where declining is most often the right answer, because the products are the harshest in the salon.
DO NOT PROCEED:
• The SCALP SHOWS OPEN SORES OR ABRASIONS. Nothing makes a caustic chemical safe on broken skin.
• RAISED, INFLAMED PATCHES noticed during consultation — POSTPONE and REFER to a physician. Do not name the condition; that is diagnosing.
• A strand that STRETCHES NOTICEABLY AND DOES NOT RETURN to its original length — poor elasticity, and a hair structure that may not survive the service.
• HAIR TREATED WITH A METALLIC DYE. The salts react with the solution and can DESTROY the hair.
• HAIR LIGHTENED TWO LEVELS LAST WEEK, requesting a hydroxide relaxer. Bonds are already broken and porosity is already raised; breakage is the common result. Reducing strength or timing does not change the underlying weakness, a conditioning treatment coats without rebuilding, and a RELEASE FORM DOCUMENTS CONSENT WITHOUT MAKING AN UNSAFE SERVICE SAFE.
• Any INCOMPATIBLE CHEMISTRY, in either direction.
TEST FIRST, DO NOT GUESS:
• A client who CANNOT RECALL whether her previous service was a thio perm or a hydroxide relaxer — perform a test on a CUT STRAND before any service. It costs nothing but time and it tells you what the missing history would have. Assuming the more common service is a guess with breakage as the penalty; a milder product on incompatible chemistry still breaks hair; and sending her away discards the diagnostic that settles it today.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE for a hydroxide relaxer is a client with a HEALTHY SCALP and GOOD ELASTICITY in UNTREATED hair. Every other profile in a typical answer set — thio-permed, highlighted, freshly scratched scalp — fails on one of the rules above.
One occupational hazard belongs to you rather than the client: some KERATIN SMOOTHING TREATMENTS release FORMALDEHYDE AS VAPOR when the product is heated. That is a ventilation and exposure question, and it is the operator standing over it all day who absorbs the risk.
And the reason record-keeping is non-negotiable here: WHICH RELAXER SYSTEM was used must be recorded, because thio and hydroxide must never be applied over one another and a client's memory is not a reliable source.
Where people lose points
✗ "The neutralizer stops the perm."
✓ It REBUILDS the disulfide bonds in the new shape, by oxidation. Stopping is what rinsing does. Calling it a stopper is why candidates then remove the rods too early — if it were only stopping something, the timing would not matter.
✗ "The neutralizing shampoo after a hydroxide relaxer rebuilds the bonds."
✓ It restores the hair's normal ACIDIC pH and stops the relaxer's action. It rebuilds nothing — lanthionization is irreversible, so there is no bond to restore and none that could revert. It also cannot restore curl that has been chemically removed. This is the single biggest difference between the two relaxer systems.
✗ "Enough time has passed since her relaxer that a perm should be fine now."
✓ Time does not reverse lanthionization. Hydroxide-relaxed hair can never take a thio wave, at eight months or eight years — only new growth could be permed. A gentler acid wave uses the same chemistry and does not help, and no filler restores the missing bonds.
✗ "A no-lye relaxer is not a hydroxide relaxer."
✓ Potassium, lithium and guanidine hydroxide are ALL hydroxide relaxers and all cause lanthionization. "No-lye" means it is not sodium hydroxide, and it is marketed as gentler on the scalp — it does not mean a different chemistry or a different incompatibility.
✗ "She wants it straighter, so I'll use the super strength."
✓ Strength is matched to the HAIR — texture, porosity, resistance — never to the desired result. Degree of straightening is controlled by processing and smoothing. Escalating strength for a straighter look is how hair is destroyed, and the exam writes this item to catch exactly that instinct.
✗ "Leaving the perm on longer gives a tighter curl."
✓ Curl size is set by ROD DIAMETER. Most of the processing in an alkaline wave happens in the first five to ten minutes, so extra time buys over-processing rather than a tighter curl — and over-processing has no chemical fix, only conditioning and postponement.
✗ "Base cream conditions the hair while the relaxer works."
✓ Base cream is an oil barrier for the SCALP, HAIRLINE AND EARS, and it is not meant to touch the hair at all. It neither moisturizes nor helps the product adhere, and it does not change the speed of the reaction on the strand.
✗ "A signed release form lets me do a service I have doubts about."
✓ It documents consent without making an unsafe service safe. It appears as a distractor on lightened-then-relaxed, poor-elasticity and broken-skin items specifically because it feels procedurally responsible while changing nothing about the chemistry.
✗ "She thinks it was a perm, so I'll treat it as a perm."
✓ Perform a test on a CUT STRAND. Assuming the more common service is a guess with breakage as the penalty, a milder product on incompatible chemistry still breaks hair, and sending her away discards the diagnostic that settles it today at no cost but time.
✗ "Breakage means the relaxer was too strong."
✓ Read the LOCATION. Breakage in a band about an inch from the scalp is overlapping onto previously relaxed hair. A strength error weakens the whole head; a timing error shows as under- or over-processing throughout. Only overlapping produces damage at one specific distance from the scalp.
✗ "Rinse the relaxer at the end of the timed period even if she says it burns."
✓ Burning means rinse IMMEDIATELY. The same applies to waving lotion running onto the neck: rinse the skin at once and replace the saturated cotton coil. A timer does not outrank a chemical burn in progress.
✗ "Shampoo well before a perm or relaxer so the product penetrates."
✓ Before a perm: a gentle shampoo with NO vigorous scalp manipulation. Before a relaxer: the client should not have scratched or vigorously brushed at all. Both rules exist for the same reason — manipulation creates abrasions that a caustic chemical can enter.
